Unlike a lot of dating websites, Black Planet is heavily slanted towards friendship and networking as well as finding you a date. This makes it an inviting place to visit, with low pressure in terms of finding a special someone. Whilst this is good for anyone who wants to chat with likeminded people (with an eye to flirtation) it isn’t necessarily the most effective site if you’ve got your mind on finding dates.
However, it’s free to use and has plenty of little extras to keep you occupied, as well as allowing you to personalize your profile page much more than most sites. There are a few concerns over scams and fake profiles, though, so it’s wise to be aware of them as you venture forth on this planet.
Perhaps the most attractive elements to this site are its profile creation tools. You can really personalize your page to express your personality. Whilst most dating websites only allow you to upload pictures into a gallery, on BlackPlanet.com you are able to incorporate these into your page as a backdrop. Therefore, your information appears over the top of your photos and adds another dimension to browsing.
You can also choose a “theme song” from a wide range of tracks, which will play to anyone who visits your page. This instantly gives a sense of the sort of music you like and the sort of person you are. Meanwhile you can include quite a lot of information, most of which is written rather than gathered from multiple choice questions. If you’ve ever used MySpace, this site is reminiscent of that.
We were also pleased to find that the site had forums and chat rooms, which provide great opportunities to talk with like-minded individuals about whatever you like. Of course, these do sometimes spiral into petty arguments, and admin doesn’t seem to do a lot about it, but you can avoid these if you’re savvy and grown up enough.
In the interim between chats, you can play games such as “Secret Admirer”, a sort of profile pictures trading game, or “Farmandia” (which never loaded for us, but sounds a bit like some kind of farming game with betting).
So, it can’t all be brilliant, right? Right. The site is easy enough to navigate but it’s a bit random at times, with lots of links, photos and information around the page, making it rather messy and unintelligible. It can be hard to know exactly where to go at times, although if you use the site for a while this does become apparent.
Signing up was also a bit glitchy and we found ourselves having to skip sections of the registration process just to get through the glitches. There are also reports of scammers using the site, particularly from Africa. It’s best to keep your wits about you then, and never hand over any money or bank details.
If you don’t mind a bit of chaos then there’s plenty of opportunity to talk with members from around the world. A number of them are looking for dating or love, but not all.
There are plenty of little things to do around the site, and you can really express yourself through your customized profile page. It’s free to use too, so why not give Black Planet a whirl?
