BlackPeopleMeet.com is a website designed to help people find their way in black dating communities. It’s part of the Match.com family, one of the best known and most widely used online dating services around today. But how does it compare to its big sister? Well, not quite so successfully, but it’s still worth checking out.

The first thing we noticed was that our searches were incredibly limited. You couldn’t really choose any particulars to filter through people unless you changed the settings on your profile to suggest that you were now interested in different genders or locations. And why would you wish to do that, generally? It’s not user friendly in that sense, and so searches could quickly become monotonous.

The reason for this lack of options became somewhat apparent based on the number of search results we received. In the area we searched (a pretty major US state) we had only 42 members returned to us in or around our area. This is a bit disappointing as we’ve had hundreds or even thousands of results for this place before.

The profiles are okay, but nothing special. Members can upload multiple photos and some have chosen high quality snaps. Unfortunately though, these appear as small thumbnails, until you enter the person’s profile page and then zoom in.

In our experience, zooming in tended to distort the dimensions of photos, meaning that they became stretched or squashed. This isn’t what you want when you’re trying to attract people to you!

The FAQ was fine, covering all the basics and allowing you to search through its information based on keywords. Apart from searching through profiles, you can receive instant matches, which are automated suggestions as to which members might tickle your fancy. You get matches each day, which is a nice way of keeping things fresh.

You can also see a lot of information in the sidebar of the website, including how many messages you have, who has viewed you, who has flirted with you and more. 

Chatting is achieved through email style messages, which allow you to take as long as you like to respond, or on an instant chat system. This in particular was well designed: you can see who is online, click on them to view their profile or just get a basic summary of their preferences. This is useful to remind yourself of who someone is before you get chatting.

We’d like to see a few video options on the site, though, to help make things a bit more personal and intimate. There’s also a lot of room to improve the search options, plus we feel the site would benefit from including a few more community tools such as chat rooms and forums. 

Black People Meet is an affordable dating site for black individuals or anyone interested in pursuing a relationship with a black person. It does feel somewhat underdeveloped in places and its membership numbers aren’t astounding, but they aren’t bad either.

Overall, a somewhat average site with quite a lot of potential with a few basic improvements.
