Black Adults claims to be a highly professional website for black singles in the UK. It sets itself apart from the crowd for being easy to use and successful in finding people dates, but how true is it?

Well the site is pretty slick looking, designed with users in mind. It’s easy enough to navigate around and you shouldn’t spend too long trying to work things out. We were somewhat perturbed (and amused) that the page which describes the site’s attention to detail and professionalism had a typo on it. This might be the first crack in the vase...

As a free member you can build a profile and upload a photo. Profiles include information on your hobbies and interests, which is good to see as so many sites can focus solely on your “stats” such as weight and how many children you have. Those are important, but surely personality comes first!

The vast majority of members seem to be from London or around the city, which is great if you are in London but less great if you’re not. Their profiles generally have a decent amount of information on them so you can get some sense of who they are, plus the members had almost all uploaded a clear photo. When you click on their profile you’ll see their main picture, which can be enlarged, plus a teeny tiny thumbnail of their other photos (again each can be expanded). 

If you want to communicate with a member (other than sending a wink) you’ll have to pay to upgrade. Prices are quite low, particularly for longer contracts, although we’re not convinced it’s good value for everyone. The long and short of it is this: the site could be useful if you’re based in London, or willing to commute, but otherwise it seems relatively useless. 

You can send emails or engage in a live chat with members, but options are somewhat limited after that. Searching is all too brief, with hardly any options for you to narrow down the results. There is a matching game whereby you click whether or not you’d like to meet someone based on their profile picture. If you choose yes, and they do, the system lets you know so you can get chatting based on your mutual attraction.

If BlackAdults expanded its borders and had more members, plus a few extra features to help people get connected in different ways – such as forums, chat rooms, blogs and so on – it would be a very useful resource for black singles in the UK. At the moment it shows promise, but it’s not quite there. However, if you are looking for a date in London, why not sign up for free and see who’s using the site.
